And for now my main goal is just that people will want to play it and to recoup the development costs. I think those type of limited physical editions are really more about giving a treat to collection-happy fans rather than a big sales opportunity and financial boost (though I haven’t looked into the numbers). Have you considered a physical release for either Gunman Clive HD Collection or Mechstermination Force? Maybe a dual pack?īH: It’s a possibility, but not something I will spend a lot of energy to make happen. Publishers such as Super Rare Games and Limited Run Games have stepped in, giving a number of smaller titles a physical release. ND: Some developers have cited a concern that digital exclusive titles will eventually disappear. Anyone else might find the game initially warm and approachable, but eventually turn it off out of sheer frustration. If you played Contra back in the day and want an enhanced, distilled run through some bosses in that gameplay style, Mechstermination Force is an expertly-designed nostalgia exercise. The final level, which admirably tries to shake up the formula, falls flat on its face and leaves that familiar boss battle sour taste. The MegaMechs are creative, fun to scale and demolish, but outdated controls, some rough environments, and strange hub-world decisions hold the game back from being great. Mechstermination Force is an enjoyable, challenging, boss-battler that does not live up to its potential. If you enjoyed Gunman Clive, this is a great expansion on the concept and well worth investigating. We'd recommend it as a more accessible alternative to (or appetiser for) Studio MDHR’s upcoming game. It's peppered with ingenious design and amusing writing and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with it. It's certainly less of a head-turner, but it's a more approachable take on boss rush platforming, with less of an emphasis on twitch-based, pixel-perfect precision. With Cuphead just around the corner, we can’t help feeling sorry for Mechstermination Force.
